Resumen

La preocupación por compatibilizar el crecimiento económico con la preservación de los activos ambientales ha pasado por varias etapas. La más conocida y extendida no es otra que el desarrollo sostenible. Este amplio concepto ha evolucionado y han surgido nuevas derivaciones, como es el caso del crecimiento verde y, posteriormente, economía azul y crecimiento azul, estas últimas con especial énfasis en la economía de los océanos cuya importancia se deriva de su carácter multifuncional e insustituible: son fuentes de biodiversidad y proveedores de alimentación humana; suministran recursos energéticos, proporcionan sistemas de transporte especialmente sostenibles y son elementos esenciales en la lucha contra el cambio climático merced a su capacidad para emitir oxígeno y absorber dióxido de carbono.


El propósito de la presente aportación se centra en un acercamiento teórico a los principios de la economía azul, así como su activación por parte de la Unión Europea y a la cuantificación de su importancia en este entorno económico. Finalmente, se desarrollan una serie de reflexiones sobre la estrategia futura en esta materia.
