Las sanciones económicas como instrumento para frenar estrategias de agresión de un país a otro, o guerras civiles, y desincentivar posibles políticas futuras de acción violenta e ilícita en el ámbito internacional tienen una larga historia. En este artículo se analizan estas sanciones desde la teoría económica, utilizando como instrumentos el análisis económico del derecho, la teoría de juegos y la teoría de la elección pública. Se hace referencia también a una cuestión clave: la efectividad de estas medidas sancionadoras, proyectando estas ideas tanto a algunos casos del pasado como a las sanciones generadas por la invasión rusa de Ucrania.
