Abstract

The Magellan-Elcano expedition is eminently commercial, but it takes place in an extraordinarily complex political and social context. For success, one of the keys will be the pacts with the local petty kings, which are not Elcano's genius, but a definite political one and one of the pillars of hegemony in the Hispanic Monarchy (except if the religion and the dynasty are at stake).
