The challenges and opportunities of the Spanish economy: a long-term perspective

Abstract

Since the 2008 financial crisis, the Spanish economy has suffered a slowdown in the process of convergence in per capita income with the EMU. This lack of convergence has been determined, fundamentally, by the persistence over time of productivity below the average of EMU countries and a low employment rate. The article briefly reviews the economic and institutional factors that have traditionally been related to both problems. Finally, we analyze to what extent the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) can reverse, at least in part, this lack of convergence.
